QUICK QUOTES:

“This mid-range category is actually what a lot of people are looking for. It's just quite unknown.”

“Everyone looks at low and expects it to be under one per cent, and then they look at full-strength, but there's this gaping middle ground, which is actually where most people would want to be.”

Joining me this week is Russell Lamb, co-founder of 6PERCENT, a new mid-range wine company producing the first in its planned range of lighter wines, a 6% merlot-cabernet sauvignon blend with half the ABV but all of the flavour.

Starting life as a lockdown wine-tasting company, Russ and his wife, Gabbi, soon came to realise that there was a demand from their clients for lower ABV wines that they were not able to meet with anything they could find and so they decided to solve the problem themselves.

In this episode we discuss the challenges in not only making a 6% wine, but in sharing it with a world that is not always ready to hear about it (let alone taste it).
We talk about the ever-present question of why lower alcohol drinks are priced the way they are even though they don’t contain alcohol (I love Russ’ answer to this by the way).

We also spend a lot of time examining the mid-range/light-alcohol category as a whole (there’s a lot to cover), blended drinking habits, and how we communicate to consumers the benefits of these new lower-alcohol drinks.

Of course, there’s the Low No Drinker BBQ-Q in which Russell shares some of his favourite go-to low/no-&-light drinks and if you’re looking to get in on the ground floor of this emerging category Russell opens up about their upcoming fundraising round*.

I truly enjoyed Russell’s company on this chat, and I enjoyed tasting his wine. If you want to give it a try too, 6PERCENT has kindly shared the code GREATTASTE10 for listeners in Low No Nation to get 10% off their order (plus free shipping over £30) at their website https://www.6percent.wine/
